ABOUT

Amalasunta (in Gothic Amalaswintha) was queen of the Goths and the only daughter of Theodoric, king of the Ostrogoths. Born in Ravenna in 494 A.D. and raised in Roman culture, she was a woman of great intelligence, learned and virile character.
When Theodoric died in 526 A.D., due to the minor age of his son, Amalasunta assumed the regency that marked a return to the policy of the best years of the reign of Theodoric.
However, the Goths, who only recognized the right of arms and badly tolerated the government of a woman, opposed the policy of Amalasunta, which aimed to maintain a balance between the two ethnic components of the kingdom, different in civilization and faith: the barbarian and the Roman. Amalasunta fell into an ambush organized by her husband.
She was kidnapped and, with a boat, transported to the island martana in Lake Bolsena where she was relegated until April 30, 535, when the killers killed her. It is not known how: strangled while bathing, stabbed, drowned, fallen from the top of the cliff of the island. You can admire the marble statue of the Queen Amalasunta in the Capitoline Museums of Rome in the section "Byzantine Art". In Marta you can not be tasted the famous "cannaiola" like wine martano dessert or the "sbroscia" typical lake soup. In Montefiascone you can not miss a visit to the cellars that preserve the famous wine "est est est". In Bagnaia you can buy the "Easter pizza" not to mention the typical Viterbo tozzetti and the delicious dairy products or the famous Canino oil everywhere.
